Dear Joan, I am writing to you because I need your advice about something that is really worrying me. Last year, when I was in grade 8, I used to get excellent grades, but lately I feel very stressed whenever I have to write a test. I am afraid that my grades will go down. I stay up late studying, sometimes even till midnight, and I know the material very well. But once I enter the classroom, I can’t remember anything. When I look around and see all the other students writing - it makes me feel even worse! Last week, I felt sick to my stomach and had a bad headache during a history test, so I left early and I didn’t answer all the questions. I am sure Please help me, as this is making me very depressed and I have no one else to turn to. Michael |
Dear Michael, I am sorry that you feel so bad when you take tests. As a school psychologist, I often deal with students in your situation. They are usually like you - good students who are used to succeeding all the time and who care, sometimes too much, about their grades. You need to do things to help you relax. Try doing breathing exercises in class before the test to help you feel calmer. As part of your routine, you should also do some physical activity like running or going to the gym. And be sure to get enough rest. Don’t stay up late studying the night before the test. Nothing is worse than coming to a test feeling tired. Why don’t you talk to someone who is close to you - like a parent, a friend or a teacher? They may have some ideas. And remember that you can’t do better than your best. You don’t have to get 100% on every test! I hope this advice helps you. Joan |
