STAND UP TO LEARN
Teachers have always told their students to sit down and pay attention. But that may change as more schools become aware of the benefits of standing desks. Standing desks are higher than regular desks and have stools nearby. Students decide when to stand or use the stool, and they can change their position throughout the day.
Researchers originally became interested in standing desks in schools as a way to help fight childhood obesity and improve the health of schoolchildren. Dr. Mark Benden from Texas A&M University completed a study on this in 2011. The results showed that children at standing desks burned 15% to 25% more calories than children at regular desks.
Burning calories is important, but the main question in schools is how the standing desks affect learning. In Dr. Benden's latest research, almost 300 children in grades two through four were studied for a full school year. The students were divided into two groups. One group studied with traditional desks and the other group studied with standing desks. There were psychologists in the classrooms to observe the students.
The psychologists kept records of how many times the students did things like looking at the teacher, answering questions or raising their hand. According to the results, students at standing desks were more involved in the lesson. They paid attention and participated more than the sitting students. In addition, they behaved better. They were calmer because they could move more. One student said, " Being able to stand or swing my legs helps me calm down so I can think better."
After the study was completed, the teachers wanted to keep the standing desks in their classrooms. One teacher explained, " The best learning takes place when students are able to move their bodies throughout the day." Or as Dr. Benden said, " Simple put, we think better on our feet than in our seat."
